Friday Night Live (FNL)

Creative Direction | Lynn Valley United Church | April 2014 - April 2020

Friday Night Live was subtitled “The Friday Night Kitchen Party”. On the surface it was designed to be a music performance and interview show. At a deeper level the event was designed as a community building experience. A place to hang out, meet people, have some food and drinks, and then listen to a super talented ‘friend’ entertain you for a while.  At its best people feel that that they are able to simply be themselves, feel welcome, and feel that they aren’t alone in the world. To me art and the artistic process is one of the most human things we can do, so I tried to create a space where people can take in the work and feel how it (either the content, the process, the story behind it) relates to their life.

“[T]he show has transformed to involve more music and it has replaced the improv with a guest artist and their story. A small band or single musician now opens the show each evening, a host sets the theme, and there’s a different artist every week. The host also interviews the artist or artists for their story – their inspiration, their motivation and their perspective. Fridays also now begin with kitchen-party-style mingling, and the artists often stay around for a bit after the shows to visit with the audience.” - Vancouver’s Best Places, vancouversbestplaces.com
